The WALL OF HOPE was created by me following a Dec '08 diagnosis of cancer with a rare gene variant. Chemo is behind me now and two PET scans and CT scans between June '09 and Oct '09 are clear. As I recover from the world of oncology, I'll make every effort to help in the newer area of gene therapy. The WALL OF HOPE, being built by photographers and artists all over the world, illustrates that LOVE AND BEAUTY IS EVERYWHERE no matter what happens in life. Peace and happiness prevails. This is what I believe and how I choose to live my life. I dedicate the Wall of Hope to my beautiful daughter, Amanda Noelle.

ARTEMISININ research approved & heavily funded in the US for cancer!!!

Hi Laura,
I hope that you are well, taking those wonderful pictures. I just wanted to let you know that we have been awarded a 3-year grant to develop artemisinin and its derivatives to treat cancer. We are very excited about the grant because the money will allow us to work on projects that we have dreamed about for many years.

I am pleased to announce that our University of Washington colleagues were awarded a 3-year grant of nearly $1.5 million this week from the WA Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) to advance our artemisinin technologies for cancer treatment. Artemisia BioMedical and LSDF press releases are attached, and on our website at www.artbiomedical.com
Our artemisinin-based therapeutics were chosen from among 61 proposals that were evaluated by a panel of national experts convened by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In a highly competitive process, each proposal was rated on its scientific merit and its potential to improve health and healthcare.

Today I Became A Cancer Survivor

Today I became a cancer survivor. My oncologist/hematologist called me when I was in the fresh produce section of Safeway. What an appropriate place to be. Health. The PET scan I had this morning came back with clear results. That's wonderful news. I'll still finish round 4 of 4 rounds of chemo on Monday, and I may throw in an extra round... like a baker's dozen. Since being diagnosed last December through today, I've lived completely at peace and with much happiness. I believe that at some point we all face illness, and can decide how to live through it. I chose to focus on love & beauty being everywhere no matter what. The Wall of Hope reflects that, and I feel grateful for all those involved in helping me to build it. It will continue to grow, and my wish is that the Wall of Hope continues to inspire others to choose how they wish to live no matter what. I also feel grateful for so much love, support, and prayers. Like anything else, we all have to manage our health throughout our lifetime. Naturally, I'll be managing my health responsibly and continuing to carry out changes I've implemented. I attribute attitude, faith, and trust to being equally the number one things that can make a difference. I believe... that we're all here for a reason. To fulfill a purpose. When we've completed the reason we're here, then we're called home. If we still have work to be done, then we're here longer. Whether here a short time or a long time doesn't mean any one person or their calling is better. It just reflects the awesome uniqueness in each of us. Each of our callings is equally significant. No matter what we do or don't do, that timing of when we stay or go home is simply not in our hands. However, we have a responsibility to ourselves and to others to live as right and well and healthy as we can in the meantime. You can be assured that my heart and mind is open to what God wishes for me to continue to complete or start anew. I will fulfill my purpose. For now, I'm off to the gym :)

This photo was taken in Ponto do Ouro in Southern Mozambique. To me it depicts hope as it is a tranquil scene depicting peace and respect between man and bull shark. Bull sharks are widely feared for their more aggressive nature and are called on of the five deadliest man-eaters. You wouldn't say so - to look at this photo would you. Sharks need immediate protection and there are many people throughout the world who care for them deeply. Hopefully we will be able to save them from extinction for our children to enjoy too.

Hi Laura,

Hope this finds you in good spirits. While this is not one of my personal favorites, this photo is heavily commented on due to the hope that it does give. Many people put themselves in the little girls shoes and they try to figure out what she is thinking. The reason why I sent it is because I think the underlying motif of the photo is that we can daydream and stare outside all day and we might see the beautiful colors that are out there. However, until we actually start moving in the right direction, the colors on the other side will always be faded and washed out. We need to take action, whether it be mental, spiritual and/or physical. Without action, we will never know what beauty is ahead. So, I hope this photo is too your liking.

This is our first God's gift. Her name is Rafaela and she is 3 years old. She came to put our lives back to track and fill us with love. After she was born we became real humans, before that we were only existing creatures. And this is Mariana, our second God's gift. It's incredible how a 1 year old little girl (or big baby) can teach us everyday, with her smile, how to be better parents. My husband and I, we are so grateful for their lives and for our healthes, so we can, together, can see them grow up and take good care of them. That empowered us, now we know how lucky we are. Hi Laura!
Ok, this has taken me so long I'm embarrassed!
When I first heard of the wall of hope I was eager to jump right in but then came the time to choose the image. I was having trouble finding an image of love. One that had love popping off the page and I loved for my own reasons too.
For quite sometime I've been wanting to get images of my grandmother but didn't want to stick the camera in her face. Then I see your posts and you talking about Mayer's song "Say" and I'm like, "why not, why wait, do it now" So I tried to be slightly sneaky while my son was playing with her. Here is the capture I got and I love it. Yes, I got it because of you and so happy for it.
You inspire me so much Laura I can't even begin to explain. Your words move me everyday. You have to be the only person in the world that I could listen to forever and never get tired of hearing what you have to say. You are just full of so much substance.

I know it's taken me a little bit to get this to you, but alas...here it is. I thought I only had one that I wanted to send, but I've revamped my portfolio this week and rediscovered some favorites. I am in awe of you as you live this part of your journey and share your heart and talents with us.
The shot of Kris is my ALL time favorite engagement shot. This was taken at Town Neck Beach on the Cape. The best thing about this shot is I didn't set it up. I actually walked away for a minute to switch lenses and when I looked up, Tom was telling Kristine something and I grabbed the moment.
Img-16 is another favorite. A very tender moment between father and son. I love capturing the relationship between people, the emotion and connection.

Keep up the good fight and your dedication to educating others and bringing hope to many. I've been thinking about which photo I could send (although I'm sure there are many I could send), but I tried to think of just one photo that inspired hope through God's creations. This photograph was taking in the White Mountains on the bank of the Black River where it meets Fish Creek. It has long been one of my very very favorite places on earth since my teenage years. The morning dawn brings light that casts out all darkness . . . I feel proud to help with the Wall of Hope!

Hi Laura,
Hope you are keeping well and your spirits up. I was diagnosed in 2003 with grade 3 breast cancer, and now have spread to by bones. I am currently keeping the pharmaceutical companies in a job, but hey, if the drugs work!!!!. I was in South Africa 2008, and photographed the view I had when staying up at the lodge in Stellenbosch.....We had no electricity, no contact with the outside world for 5 days and it was just heaven. With no sense of time or the world outside it was as though you were in your own little universe and nothing mattered. Keep well and there is life after a cancer diagnosis. It makes you appreciate the little minor things in life and be grateful for what we have been given. You are in my thoughts. As the saying goes Laura, "Its not over until the fat lady sings, and she wont be singing for a long, long time"

You've been in my prayers since I read the message about your diagnosis...
This truly is one of those time when words just don't quite cut it...
I'm sending along some pictures for your wall...the one with the tree is from Sedona AZ...
When I saw this tree (seemingly) growing out of the rocks...it just amazed me.
If God can make that happen...then all is possible through him.
The other tree is on some friends property in Oklahoma, even though it appears to be void of life, it still stand with such stature...and pride...holding it's arms out to heaven...
Please take care and know that there are those that keep you in our hearts during this difficult time....
